Throughout its history, Norman Disney & Young (NDY) has been committed to giving back to the community in a number of ways. This commitment to charitable causes has inspired the establishment of the NDY Charitable Trust (NDY Trust) which looks to provide support to communities in need.
Simultaneously launched across all NDY offices on Friday 2nd December, the NDY Trust aims to make a difference to those communities in need through the combined efforts of its people, and financial support from NDY staff and management.
“The NDY Charitable Trust came about as we considered our broader corporate responsibilities whilst planning our recently launched NDY Mission statement and organisational Values,” says NDY Market Director and NDY Trust Chairman, Dennis O’Brien.
“You’ll find that each of our six values relates back in some way to corporate responsibility and, in particular, the understanding of community expectations is an important part of our mission and very applicable to the establishment of the Trust.”
Funds collected through the charity will be distributed in two ways. Firstly, to all NDY offices so they can continue to provide valuable funding to their local charities. Secondly, funds will also be allocated to supporting the work of global charities – generally in third world countries – that have a synergy with NDY’s work as engineers.
“We are currently supporting the work of Disaster Aid Australia and the Skyjuice Foundation and discussions are underway with Engineers Without Borders. Importantly, these charities provide NDY staff with an opportunity to also volunteer their time and expertise,” says O’Brien.
“In terms of what we’ve looked at initially for suitable charities, we’ve certainly gone to the most basic of needs: food, water and shelter. In the future we will look to extending this to education, which of course empowers communities for longer-term self-sufficiency. This will complement the practical assistance NDY provides on a range of volunteering efforts around the globe, through its pool of skilled and talented engineers.”
The NDY Trust holds Deductible Gift Recipient Status (DGR) and provides the NDY Group with a vehicle for staff to donate to the fund personally or via fund raising activities, including a facility for contributions to be debited from salary.
“The participation of staff is an important ingredient to ensuring the growth of the Trust,” says O’Brien. “We very much see the Trust as an initiative that is run by staff with the support of management, rather than a management led initiative.”
