Innovation awards a barometer of talent

09 Oct 2011
An advanced unified ICT design and a reverse glazing calculator were just two of the standout winners at the 2011 Norman Disney & Young (NDY) Innovation Awards held in Melbourne on Friday 7th October.

The Melbourne city skyline provided an appropriate backdrop for the annual NDY Innovation Awards showcase by one of Australia’s leading engineering consultancies.

Established in 2008 to recognise and reward innovative solutions within the ranks of NDY, the Innovation Awards are a unique and highly regarded initiative within the industry. The 2011 NDY Innovation Awards program once again generated significant enthusiasm throughout all NDY offices resulting in a total of 87entries with 13 of these shortlisted as finalists.

NDY CEO Ian Hopkins told guests that the Innovation Awards are about fostering a culture that values forward-thinking ideas.

“Innovation is one of the core values at NDY and is deeply engrained in our approach to providing excellent solutions to clients. The NDY awards program celebrates and rewards those individuals within the company that have undertaken a journey of inspired creativity to challenge the norm.

“By implementing the innovative ideas presented, and the others percolating within the company, we continue to commit to a journey that embraces excellence and ensures the NDY brand is synonymous with providing clients the required innovative solutions,” Mr Hopkins said.

There were six categories presented at this year’s NDY Innovation Awards with the winners as follows:

Innovation in Training
: Laura Esperanza & Alia Vryens for Training Videos

Innovation in Business Development & Marketing
: Hamish McMurray for Defence Corporate Knowledge

Innovation in Research & Development
: Alex Sear for Outside Air Concentration Simulator

Innovation in Business Process & Technology
: Andrew Phoenix for NDY Schedula

Innovation in Sustainability
: Dhimendra Singh, Rachel Hogan and Matthew Webster as joint winners for Reverse Glazing Calculator

Innovation in Engineering Excellence
: Grant Dawson & David Parsons for BHP Billiton City Square Unified ICT Design.

According to Mr Hopkins, these categories provide an important framework to the Awards and to the ongoing diversity of NDY’s service delivery and excellence.

"The Awards program is a process of unearthing those true NDY innovators within each of the six innovation categories: these categories reflect what’s important to the success of NDY today and into the future.

"Our winners and finalists have been on an adventure of transforming an initial thought into solid outcomes. This is an inspiring process and augurs well for the long term success of NDY.”
